Bye, Winter

ASCENDANT, CATALYTIC, WABI-SABI, WOKE

We’ve gleefully leaped into cottony piles of fresh snow. We’ve waded though dubiously murky mixes of slush. We’ve ice-skated up -and fallen down- sidewalks. We’ve plowed and shoveled and scraped and frostbitten our way out…

But we’ve done it, folks! We’ve navigated our way through winter and, if you’re like me, you’re re-freaking-joicing.

BYE, WINTER! Buh-Buh-BYEEE!

Spring is hitting town tomorrow, and it’s rolling up like Pauly Shore in Son in Law. Ecstatic/unruly/unkempt/charged with possibility and perfectly imperfect (see the Wabi-Sabi book recommendation below!).

May we stay woke to the wonders blossoming around us.

From the ever-reliable cropping of crocuses to whatever unexpected opportunities blow our way (like those ethereal, wish-come-true dandelion puffs), it’s time to

FEEL THE BREEZE, AND RIDE IT.

In The Stars

Below, please find three starlets of the stars. These women help explain how our planet’s current placement in the cosmic geometry effects our experience down here on earth:

Salad

Celery: It’s time to stop thinking it sucks.

The last time celery was shining in the culinary (or health-craze) spotlight was circa 1980, and I think Adam Gopnik had it right when he wrote that mass trends seem to crest and fall in 40 year waves (The Forty-Year Itch). So, howsabout we all channel our inner BunBun (not not the name of my childhood bunny)?

To rejuvenate my mind, body and spirit in prep for spring, I’ve been juicin’ and crunchin’ on organic stalks (fyi $2.50 for MASSIVE bunches at Whole Foods…all too doable!). But I want to get more creative, so Google led me to this brilliant article (by Scott Hocker) and recipe (by chef Ignacio Mattos, of Estela in NYC) in TASTE. I’ll be subbing out the cheese, but you should live your best, perhaps dairy-inclusive, life!:

I like that in a single paragraph, Hocker drops:

  • “spelunking” as his adventurous means of endeavoring salad component-to-fork

  • “a tickle of pickled radish” (how marvelous and creepy it is for a grown man to write ‘tickle’)

  • a reference to navigating a menu’s salad section as, essentially, gambling

So…STALK up!

Mantra

FEEL THE BREEZE AND LET IT FLY!

(If you were a good student and watched til the end of that Son in Law Youtube clip at the top of this post, you’ll hear this wise mantra bestowed by Mr. Shore upon the conservative farming community he invades…aka upgrades!)

At the start of this spring season, I encourage basking in the soft -or blustering- breezes that surround us. We are here to FEEL, not avoid or detour or procrastinate or hide. We are here to welcome the world as it presents itself to us, and if the situation/person/weather isn’t “perfect,” it’s on us to elevate our perspective. Let it in, let it be…or let it fly!
